Shedeur Sanders Sends Message Ahead of Browns Decision

The Cleveland Browns have been potentially the surprise of the first half of the 2026 NFL season. They are 5-3 and third place in the AFC North. However, things are starting to go south after a crushing 27-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8.

At the start of the game, quarterback Deshaun Watson took a rough hit to the head and went to the sideline for evaluation. Shedeur Sanders filled in for a drive before Watson returned and finished the game at QB.

Ahead of Week 9’s contest at the New Orleans Saints, Watson has officially been placed in concussion protocol. His status for Sunday’s game is in serious jeopardy, as the injury seems worse than first thought.

There is not much information available on Watson at this time. On the day at Pittsburgh, he took eight sacks and was hit 13 times in total. If he was concussed while subject to that, he and Cleveland may have a problem on their hands.

The Browns will now have a decision to make for who the starting QB will be against the Saints. On Wednesday, Sanders told Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer that he is grateful and excited for the opportunity that Cleveland has given him. This seemingly indicates he will start.

A starter for the New Orleans game likely will not be formally announced for some time, but if Sanders starts it certainly will not be his first in the NFL. During 2025, he started seven games and came in relief to an eighth.

It was apparent that the fifth-round draft choice was a project. He completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He took 23 sacks and had a passer rating of 68.1.

The hope is that with a more complete roster and offensive line he could be a capable starter. Sunday would be a good opportunity against the Saints, as their defense ranks 29th in points per game allowed and 28th in yards allowed.
