Should 49ers look to three-time Pro Bowler to counter Rams' Myles Garrett move?

When it rains, it pours for the San Francisco 49ers. Not only do they have the defending Super Bowl champions in their division, but they also have the reigning Defensive Player of the Year now.

The Los Angeles Rams' blockbuster trade for Myles Garrett put the rest of the league on notice, and Kyle Shanahan's team can't afford to rest on its laurels.

Considering that, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports made a case for Jadeveon Clowney as an ideal response to this move.

While not on the same level as Garrett -- no one is -- he's a proven veteran with 66.5 career sacks, and he'd give the defense a much-needed boost.

The San Francisco 49ers should make a run at Jadeveon Clowney

"Adding a healthy, proven pass-rush threat along the edge in Clowney would relieve some of the urgency on those two to rush back from their injuries," wrote Podell. "Plus, Clowney already has plenty of pass-rush chemistry with new 49ers defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa after suiting up together in Dallas last season."

At 33, Clowney is no spring chicken, and the 49ers should be more than set with Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams returning from injury.

That said, it never hurts to have a reliable headhunter coming off the bench, and he just had 8.5 sacks on the Dallas Cowboys' bottom-feeding defense last season.

The 49ers have been tied to Joey Bosa for most of the offseason, but they've also admitted he might be a little too pricey for them. Spotrac projects Clowney's market value at just $5.7 million per year, so he might be within their price range.

The NFC West will be absolutely brutal next season, and with the 49ers' never-ending string of injuries and misfortune, their Super Bowl window might shut if they don't make some moves.
