Is it officially time to start worrying about Joe Milton?
That is the question some fans are asking after the Dallas Cowboys' 31-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at AT&T Stadium in a game where Milton looked far from the player many thought he was in training camp.
Yes, it is preseason, but after the Los Angeles Rams' performance, we expected to see some level of improvement from Joe, but a three-and-out to start, followed by a safety from a blitz he never sawcoming, it wasn't a good start.
Milton was 2 for 8 for 14 yards at one stage in the first half (ended going 9 for 18 for 122 yards, one touchdown), with the offense simply not offering much at all, leaving Matt Eberflus' defense at the mercy of the Ravens' run game.
Given that Milton is seen as Dak Prescott's backup, is head coach Brian Schottenheimer concerned about how poor the play has been from Milton?
“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned," Schottenheimer said. "We didn’t get in a rhythm. … It wasn’t just Joe.”
No, it wasn't just Joe, but he had a lot to do with it.
Given that the backup role is down to Milton and Will Grier, who got some snaps after Milton sat with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, can Schottenheimer and his team trust those two players?
“I think we have to believe that," Schotty added. "I think we do believe that. … I’m not panicked.”
To me, if you are answering a question in preseason about being "panicked," then you have something to panic about.
And being August, that is nightmare fuel.
