Should Steelers consider trading QB Russell Wilson?

Quarterback Justin Fields has the Steelers 3-0 to start the 2024 season, and his improving play has many arguing that he should remain the starter even when Russell Wilson (calf) is healthy.

Since signing him in March, Pittsburgh has supported the idea that Wilson is its starting quarterback. He is still listed as QB1 on the team's depth chart.

If the Steelers are ready to change their mind, as the locker room seems to be buying into Fields, some believe they should consider trading Wilson.

"The Steelers will surely have to anoint [Fields] with the QB1 label at some point," USA Today's Nate Davis writes. "The 2024 season is only three weeks old, but several teams already seem to be entering the throes of a quarterback crisis."

That is true. The Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins are examples of teams with question marks at quarterback.

Titans quarterback Will Levis has thrown just four touchdowns and five interceptions in the first three weeks.

On Sunday, the Raiders benched quarterback Gardner Minshew in their 36-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

And the Dolphins could be on their third quarterback after losing Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) and Skylar Thompson, who left Sunday's game with a chest injury.

It would make sense for all three teams to call Pittsburgh, as Wilson would likely be an upgrade over all of them.

The question is: Would trading Wilson make sense for the Steelers?

Head coach Mike Tomlin has said countless times that Pittsburgh wants volunteers, not hostages. So, if Wilson wants to go elsewhere, the team would likely grant him that wish.

However, if that doesn't happen, it seems unlikely he'd be moved.

The Steelers look like a well-rounded team primed for a playoff push, but if something were to happen to Fields, Wilson should be able to provide solid play at quarterback.

It remains to be seen whether the same could be said about backup quarterback Kyle Allen, who's thrown for 4,734 yards, 26 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in his six-year NFL career.

Pittsburgh's injuries are already starting to pile up, and it wouldn't hurt to have a player with Wilson's experience as a backup.

If the Steelers feel good about Allen, a trade could come together, but they must first go back on their word that Wilson is their QB1.
