Should Steelers trade veteran backup to QB-needy team?

The Steelers may just have the deepest quarterback room in all of football. Should they deal one of their veteran backups to a QB-needy team?

Mason Rudolph, who is officially the third-string quarterback on Pittsburgh's roster, has been the subject of trade rumors to the quarterback-needy Patriots.

Before Thursday, New England had just one quarterback on its 53-man roster (Mac Jones). But after claiming QB Matt Corral off waivers on Thursday, the Patriots shouldn't feel comfortable at the position.

Jones has already underwhelmed, coming off a 14-touchdown and 11-interception season in 2022, and Corral, a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2022, has yet to see action in a regular season game.

The same cannot be said for Rudolph.

Rudolph, a former third-round pick, has played in 17 games (10 starts) entering his sixth season in the league. The 28-year-old has thrown for 2,366 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his career.

Although those numbers don't jump off the stat sheet, Rudolph has proven to be able to play when needed with a 5-4-1 record as a starter.

Of course, it will come down to what the compensation would be. It's unlikely the Steelers would just hand Rudolph over for pennies, especially with the 2019 season when QB Ben Roethlisberger went down still on the back of their mind.

But if New England were to offer Pittsburgh a deal it can't refuse like a mid-round pick, it would be difficult to turn down, especially with Rudolph playing on a one-year deal.

Rudolph's tenure with the Steelers has certainly had its ups and downs. A fresh start with the Patriots could be beneficial for both sides.
