The Indianapolis Colts addressed a real need in their secondary on Tuesday, signing veteran safety Jonathan Owens to bolster a thin group heading into next season. At 5-foot-11 and 214 pounds, Owens enters his ninth NFL year having played for Houston, Green Bay, and Chicago across eight seasons.

In 82 career games and 35 starts, he has put up 295 tackles, two interceptions, and eight pass breakups. But his value has always gone beyond the stat sheet. Owens has logged 990 career special teams snaps, including at least 230 in each of the last three seasons.

His 264 snaps in 2025 were a career high, and in 2024, he turned in one of Chicago's most memorable early-season plays, returning a blocked punt for a touchdown in a Week 1 win over Tennessee.

Owens marked the occasion on social media, posting a photo from his signing alongside his wife, Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles.

"To new beginnings. Looking forward to making Indy our new home… Year 9 it's UP!!!!" Owens wrote.

Biles, never far from the spotlight when it comes to her husband's career, jumped in too. On Friday, March 13, she reposted news of the deal on her Instagram Stories with a message that read, "No Friday the 13th scaries here," before adding, "So proud of you, baby," and signing off with "Indy, here we come."

One of the most decorated athletes in sports history, 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals as an artistic gymnast, Biles has been a constant presence through each step of Owens' NFL journey. Now, both of them are headed to Indianapolis.

On the field, Owens figures to make his first mark on special teams. With over 1,000 career snaps across five of the six units, he brings a level of experience and reliability that should upgrade that phase right away for the Colts. The more interesting question is what he can do defensively.

Indianapolis does not have much proven depth behind Cam Bynum at safety, which opens up real competition on the depth chart. Owens, with 35 career starts, walks into that situation with more of a resume than most of the names already there.

Whether he carves out a consistent defensive role will depend on how camp goes, but the door is open and Owens has the background to push through it.
