Simpson In, Bennett Uncertain: McVay Talks Quarterback Preseason Plan

"Ty definitely will (play)," McVay said. "I haven't decided on Stetson yet."

According to The Athletic's Nate Atkins, Bennett took all the second-team reps during Saturday's practice while Simpson watched.

That has been the pattern throughout camp in the backup quarterback competition behind starter Matthew Stafford. As has been reported consistently over the past two weeks, Bennett has left an impression on the coaching staff — particularly McVay, offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone — showing growth in commanding the offense. He also entered camp with an edge: three years of experience in the scheme.

Simpson, meanwhile, has focused on learning the playbook, soaking up information from coaches and fellow quarterbacks and peppering them with questions. He said earlier this offseason that he's probably "annoying" Stafford at this point, given how often he asks questions. On the field, there have been highs and lows — plenty to learn and develop, but the potential is there.

McVay has a history of sitting backups in preseason games. Former No. 2 Jimmy Garoppolo didn't play a snap in his last two seasons backing up Stafford. If the Rams sit Bennett, at least for the preseason opener, it would signal the coaching staff believes he can handle the primary backup role — for now.

The Rams selected Simpson 13th overall in the 2026 NFL draft, beginning the process of preparing him to eventually take over for the 38-year-old Stafford. That transition may not come anytime soon, with the reigning MVP still playing at an elite level.

Bennett, 28, has capitalized on his opportunity since Garoppolo's departure, showing the confidence that comes with three years of learning the scheme while buried on the depth chart. As the preseason opener draws closer, his status will become clearer.
