'SNF' takeaways: Chiefs get statement win over Lions

The Kansas City Chiefs overwhelmed the shorthanded Detroit Lions with a 30-17 win behind a historic night from quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a strong defensive showing.

Here are four takeaways from Sunday's nightcap:

The Chiefs are looking dangerous

Don't look now, but the Chiefs (3-3) appear to be returning to form after a slow start to the season. Look no further than Mahomes, who was 22-of-30 for 257 yards and three TDs, with an additional 32 yards and a TD on the ground. His first passing TD of the night, a six-yard strike on fourth down to wide receiver Xavier Worthy, was the 300th of his career, making him the fastest to reach the mark in NFL history.

In addition to Mahomes' brilliance, tight end Travis Kelce recorded team-highs in receptions (six) and receiving yards (78), his second straight game with at least six catches and 60 yards. Combine their success with the response from a defense that struggled on Monday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it is clear the Chiefs are not going away. In fact, they might be just getting started.

Lions must get healthy in secondary

A couple of three-and-outs and two turnovers on downs did not help, but the mounting injuries to Detroit's defense were a major factor against the Chiefs. Cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (shoulder), Avonte Maddox (hamstring), Khalil Dorsey (wrist/concussion), D.J. Reed (hamstring) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (shoulder) were either inactive for the game or are on injured reserve.

That is a lot to overcome, especially going against a Chiefs team moving the ball like it has been the last two weeks. Detroit is a completely different team when it is healthy on both sides, so getting its secondary back is going to be key to its success.

More help is on the way for Kansas City

It has not been the most exciting start to the season for the Chiefs, but they still sit at 3-3 and seem to be returning to form on offense after back-to-back games with at least 300 total yards. As they head into a Week 7 AFC West battle against the Las Vegas Raiders, there will be another weapon on offense for Mahomes to air it out to.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice is set to return from his six-game suspension and could be the last piece to the puzzle for Kansas City. Rice has become one of Mahomes' top targets with nine TDs in his first two seasons. As this offense overcomes its inconsistencies and injuries, Rice's return makes them that much more dangerous and puts even more pressure on opposing defenses to find a way to slow them down.

Sam LaPorta makes an absurd TD catch

Despite the struggles from Detroit's secondary amid its rash of injuries, the Lions' offense did everything it could to keep pace on Sunday night. While QB Jared Goff was solid (23-of-29 for 203 yards and two TDs), tight end Sam LaPorta made a highlight-reel grab in the back of the end zone to cap an 81-yard drive and make it a 20-17 game in favor of the Chiefs early in the fourth quarter.

That was one of LaPorta's five catches for 55 yards in the game, second only to WR Jameson Williams, who went for 66 yards and the team's first TD of the night in the opening quarter. The Lions came away with their second loss of the season, but not without a spectacular catch from LaPorta to keep them within striking distance.
