Social media roasts Fox Sports after Greg Olsen wins Emmy

Embrace the awkwardness.

Not long after being demoted to Fox’s No. 2 NFL analyst role in favor of Tom Brady (and taking a $7 million pay cut), Greg Olsen won the Emmy for outstanding personality in the event analyst category on Tuesday night.

While Fox Sports was likely trying to recognize Olsen's outstanding work with its congratulatory tweet, the network was roasted on social media for its handling of Olsen’s situation.

Here are a few of the top quips.

Olsen, a three-time Pro Bowler, broke into sportscasting after retiring from the NFL in 2020. He was promoted to Fox’s No. 1 broadcast team along with Kevin Burkhardt after just one season, replacing Joe Buck and Troy Aikman who left to host ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”

Two seasons ago, Olsen and Burkhardt called Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

The 39-year-old’s demotion to the No. 2 broadcast team was criticized by many, including Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who said the network did Olsen dirty in bumping him for Brady simply because of the latter’s celebrity status.

Olsen seems to be taking his demotion in stride, but he also seemed to hint that he may not be OK with playing second fiddle beyond this season.

“I think there’s a lot of people wondering what I’m going to say right now,” Olsen said during his acceptance speech. “I don’t know what the future holds, all I know is I love talking football, I love talking ball. I love studying it, I love seeing where the game is going, wherever that takes me, whatever level it is. I’m more committed to the game of football now.”
