Despite their shortcomings every week, it’s hard to imagine things going from bad to worse for this Jets team on a weekly basis. They had just lost in an ugly fashion last week to the Denver Broncos. The team registered -10 net passing yards in that game. Surely it couldn’t have gotten worse? Turns out there’s a plane even lower than rock bottom in the NFL right now and its only resident is the Jets. The Jets suffered yet another loss, this time to the now 4-3 Carolina Panthers. In terms of the football played on the field, this loss was borderline identical to last week’s. The Jets only allowed 13 points once again and they had good special teams play, specifically from punter Austin McNamara. The same negative pertained though, the offense is simply not good enough. Here’s more on the Jets latest loss.
The changes that the Jets have made defensively in the last two weeks have worked wonders for this unit. The run defense was very impressive last week, and it was just as good this week. Panthers’ backup runningback Rico Dowdle was held to just 79 yards rushing after tallying almost 500 scimmage yards in his previous two games. The starter Chuba Hubbard was held in even better check, only registering 31 yards. They had 17 carries and 14 carries respectively, so the Panthers were really trying to get both of them going to no avail. This was the result of another great Quinnen Williams game. He wasn’t a force as a pass rusher, only registering 2 pressures and 2 hurries in this game. In run defense, he ended the game with 6 tackles and 5 defensive stops according to PFF. The Jets coverage unit had a great day as well. Sauce Gardner allowed zero catches in this game, breaking up the one pass that was thrown his way. Brandon Stephens only allowed 2 catches on 4 targets for 27 yards, breaking up the two other passes that came his way. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. did not play at the elite level he played at last week, but he registered 6 tackles as well as only 32 yards in coverage allowed on 4 catches. Overall, a great game from the Jets defense as they ultimately only allowed 13 points, despite the loss.
Give this to Steve Wilks, #Jets: This is back-to-back good games from their defense. Sticky coverage, rush starting to get home. Looks like things are starting to click.

The offense has been quite possibly the worst in the NFL this year. After Week 1, they have only scored 7 offensive touchdowns. Here’s a full breakdown of those touchdowns:
State of the #Jets offense: In the last 6 games, the offense has produced 7 TDs.
0 in the first half
1 in the the 3rd Q (43-yard scramble by Fields vs MIA)
6 in the 4th Q, all with the Jets trailing by at least 13 pts (includes 4 TDs in the last 4 mins)

For the second week in a row, Justin Fields was a disaster. So much so, that head coach Aaron Glenn benched him to start the second half. Fields completed 6 passes on 12 attempts for only 46 yards. He also tallied 22 yards on the ground on 4 attempts. This is simply not an acceptable level of play in this league, and it certainly won’t lead to the Jets winning a game this season. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor played the rest of the game. He was better in some aspects, but it didn’t lead to anything. Taylor went 10/22 for 126 yards along with 2 interceptions. He was challenging the defense downfield much more than Fields, but the defense won those battles. Breece Hall was also not featured nearly as much as many thought he would be. He only had 13 touches this game, including none in the fourth quarter. This must be rectified for next week.
The Jets will certainly need the offense to figure something out if they want to achieve their first win of the season. Next week, they have to face the Cincinnati Bengals. They are one game removed from defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in a shootout.
