Sportsbooks contradict themselves with Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy with latest betting line that reflects positively

The sportsbooks have been all over the place when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings

When the sportsbooks dropped their initial lines for how the Vikings will do in the 2025 season, they weren't very good. As of the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4th, things haven't gotten much better.

  • Super Bowl odds: +3000 (T-14th)
  • NFC North winner: +400 (3rd)
  • Win total: 8.5 (Over: -145)

That is quite the take from DraftKings Sportsbook , and they aren't alone in that thinking. Considering how deep the Vikings roster is, that's a rough outlook and it feels rooted in a lack of belief in first-year starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Sportsbooks believe in J.J. McCarthy now

While it does make sense to be a little bit concerned with how good McCarthy will be, there isn't consistency across the betting lines.

DraftKings Sportsbook has the passing touchdown lines and they have McCarthy's over/under at 24.5 touchdowns. That number doesn't seem too high, but it's very high compared to others around the league. In fact, McCarthy is tied for ninth in the NFL. The below quarterbacks are the ones who have a higher over/under ahead or tied with McCarthy

  • Joe Burrow: 33.5
  • Baker Mayfield: 28.5
  • Jared Goff: 28.5
  • Lamar Jackson: 28.5
  • Josh Allen: 27.5
  • Patrick Mahomes: 27.5
  • Dak Prescott: 26.5
  • Jordan Love: 25.5
  • Bo Nix: 24.5
  • Matthew Stafford: 24.5

This puts McCarthy ahead of the like of:

  • Caleb Williams
  • C.J. Stroud
  • Drake Maye
  • Geno Smith
  • Tua Tagovailoa
  • Trevor Lawrence
  • Brock Purdy
  • Sam Darnold
  • Jalen Hurts
  • Kyler Murray
  • Jayden Daniels

In fact, there wasn't a single quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class higher on the list than McCarthy, as Nix was tied at 24.5.

If they believe that McCarthy's likely outcome of passing touchdowns with the running game likely to take a massive step forward after pairing Aaron Jones with Jordan Mason and a significantly improved offensive line.

So, what is it? Are the Vikings going to struggle because of McCarthy or is McCarthy going to be incredibly good as a first-year starter by throwing around 25 touchdowns? It doesn't add up.
