Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers Draws Trade Speculation Before Season

Trade deadline chatter usually waits until the regular season settles into a clear pattern, but the Pittsburgh Steelers already find themselves the subject of speculation about a potential quarterback move involving Aaron Rodgers.

The team has yet to play a preseason contest, yet discussions about possible roster adjustments at the midseason point have surfaced in national media circles. Rodgers, the veteran signal-caller who joined the Steelers for what he has described as his final NFL campaign, sits at the center of those conversations.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio raised the idea during a recent appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast. He noted that after 19 consecutive seasons without a losing record, the Steelers could face their first sub-.500 finish in two decades under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Should that scenario unfold, Florio suggested the organization might consider dealing Rodgers to afford him one last postseason opportunity.

“There’s a chance this thing goes sideways,” Florio warned. “You get to the trade deadline, you can have Aaron Rodgers maybe asking to go somewhere that may need a quarterback. Some contender that may need a quarterback because ‘Get me the hell outta here, this is my last year. I want to have a chance to play into the postseason.'”

Florio pointed to a potential decision window around Thanksgiving. By that stage of the schedule, the Steelers would know whether they remained in legitimate contention for the playoffs.

“If we’re (the Steelers) not contending by Thanksgiving,” he stated. “Why do we want to play out the string with Aaron Rodgers?”

Inside the organization, the focus remains squarely on competing for a Super Bowl title. Rodgers brings a résumé that includes four league Most Valuable Player awards and a Super Bowl XLV victory with the Green Bay Packers, where he completed 24 of 39 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns in the championship game. His career totals stand at more than 62,000 passing yards and over 475 touchdown throws entering the 2026 season.

The Steelers, winners of six Super Bowl trophies in franchise history, have made clear through their preparation and training camp approach that they view themselves as legitimate contenders this year. McCarthy, who previously guided the Packers to a Super Bowl title, has emphasized building around Rodgers’ experience and the supporting pieces already in place.

League observers, however, hold more measured expectations. Florio highlighted the gap between the team’s internal confidence and external skepticism, noting that a disappointing start could force difficult choices by the trade deadline in early November.

Any potential landing spot for Rodgers would require a team already positioned for a playoff run yet suddenly in need of a starting quarterback. Injuries or unexpected underperformance at the position can alter a contender’s outlook quickly, though few such situations currently exist across the league. Most clubs with realistic Super Bowl aspirations already feature established starters under center.

Rodgers has repeatedly stated that this season represents his final year in professional football, a declaration that adds urgency to Pittsburgh’s plans. The Steelers have invested in surrounding him with talent designed to maximize that limited window, aiming to deliver another deep postseason run for the future Hall of Famer.

Historically, the franchise has shown patience with veteran quarterbacks while maintaining competitive standards. Since 2004, Pittsburgh has avoided losing seasons entirely, a streak that ranks among the longest active runs in the NFL. Breaking that mark would mark a significant shift under the new coaching staff.

Even if the season progresses as hoped, the organization must balance short-term ambitions with longer-term roster construction. Rodgers’ presence provides immediate credibility, yet the clock on his career continues to tick.

For now, the Steelers continue their preparations with the belief that they can contend for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Whether external voices like Florio’s prove prophetic or the team’s optimism holds firm will become clearer once the regular season begins in earnest and the standings take shape.
