The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun another season with a completely new offense. With George Pickens, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson off to different destinations, the passing game has changed for the Steelers entirely.
Now, Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf lead the charge, and got off to a fast start in the Steelers first game with four passing touchdowns since the 2020 season in their win over the New York Jets. With four receptions and 82 yards for Metcalf, the connection between the two was easily seen.
Rodgers took the time out to speak on Metcalf recently, making sure to highlight the positives of his new teammate.
“He’s about the right stuff. He cares about it enough to watch the film and put in the time and take notes and ask questions and come over and sit next to me during the week at various times to try and get on the same page… that’s unfortunately not the standard around the league,” Rodgers said.
He then took some time to compare Metcalf to his former teammates in Green Bay, highlighting some of the elite receiving talent that the future Pro Football Hall Of Famer has worked with in his long career.
“That was [the standard] a lot of times in Green Bay, because those guys kinda saw what it was like with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb and James Jones. And Davante got to watch that, and he was the next guy in line… When you’re lead dog in the room, he’s also a great guy and prepares the right way, it makes it easy for the rest of the room to just follow his lead,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers and Metcalf's connection has just begun, and that can prove to be both positive and negative. It is a long season, and while they are off to a great start it is possible that they do converge in either a positive or negative direction in their relationship. If it goes well, the Steelers could win their first playoff game in nearly a decade. If it does not, it could spell the continuation of a mediocre decade of football in Pittsburgh.
