Cam Heyward is the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pro Bowler, All-Pro, Walter Payton Man of the Year, and team captain, he speaks for the Steelers just as much as Mike Tomlin.
And in his latest commentary, it seems he's had it up to here with Aaron Rodgers...
"I ain’t doing that darkness retreat. I don’t need any of that crap. Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t," Heyward said of Rodgers on his podcast. "That’s simple, that’s the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers if you want to be part of it, so be it. If you don’t, no skin off my back.”
The Steeles continue to be in a holding pattern at QB. While they await Rodgers' decision, they have largely put free agency acquisitions on the back burner, and if everything falls through , it looks like Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and a rookie will be your QB trio in 2025.
That simply isn't good enough,. Fans know it, players know it, and above all else the Steelers brass know it. That's why they are waiting on Rodgers in the first place. They believe he gives time their best shot to win a championship in 2025, a year that may be their final viable chance before they start rebuilding-retooling the roster.
But that doesn't mean they should be being held hostage by a player whose top choice is the Minnesota Vikings. Let's be clear here. No matter how high you are on Aaron Rodgers, he's 42 years old, less than 2 years removed from an Achilles tear, and comes with a lot of...let's say personality.
So to think that he is the end all be all would be as massive overreach by the Steelers. In fact, if they swing and miss again on another big-time acquisition in a similar manner to the Brandon Aiyuk saga from last summer, it's going to be a bad look for Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin, and Art Rooney.
Frankly it will be embarrassing given the fact that they have put all their chips in on Rodgers, yet still await a decision from him, almost as if they are his puppet.
So unless they have another trick up their sleeve, the Steelers had better hope Rodgers commits.
