Steelers CB Patrick Peterson has seen a lot of football as he enters his 13th season in the NFL. So much so that he practically guarantees he'll intercept 49ers second-year QB Brock Purdy in Week 1.
"There is some tell signs out there that tell us what plays we're gonna get when those guys are in certain situations," Peterson said on the "All Things Covered Podcast." "When I get my pick on Sunday, we'll talk about it."
It's a bold statement by the 33-year-old veteran, who should know better than anyone how far and few between interceptions come in the NFL. However, Peterson has shown no signs of slowing down, posting a league second-best five interceptions a season ago.
Nonetheless, Pittsburgh will take whatever it can get from Peterson in what could be one of the team's most difficult matchups of the 2023 season.
The 49ers are coming off back-to-back NFC title game appearances with one of the more talented offenses in the league, which includes RB Christian McCaffery, WR Deebo Samuel, WR Brandon Aiyuk and TE George Kittle.
San Francisco's biggest weakness on offense may be its young quarterback. If the Steelers can rattle him, Peterson may be right in his prediction. If not, he'll have to eat his words come Sunday.
Purdy has since responded to Peterson's comments and certainly took the high road.
"I don't really know what to say about that. He's a good player," Purdy told reporters. "It's the competitive nature of football. So, we'll see."
Both teams have high aspirations for 2023, so get your popcorn ready because this one certainly has the makings of what could be the game of the week.
