Steelers’ former DB takes a shot at 2023 QB room, ‘finally have a QB with some credibility’
Scott Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

It's not often that you see former teammates take a shot at one another, or at least not in a public setting.

But when you have the equity built up that a player like Patrick Peterson has, you are probably less afraid to voice your opinion.

That turned out to be the exact case when Peterson went on the Jim Rome Show earlier this week:

Peterson blasts last year's QBs

"Now you finally have a quarterback with credibility and someone you can count on being in the lineup," Peterson told the Jim Rome show in regard to text messages between him and Steelers HC Mike Tomlin.

A pointed shot at the 2023 QB room, Peterson's message encapsulates all of Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and Kenny Pickett, though the points about credibility and availability seem like attacks more so directed at Pickett than the former.

That would be a very different tune from the one Peterson was singing just months ago when he and Pickett were both on the team:

“I think Kenny Pickett will have the opportunity to really reap the fruits of this labor, having [New OC] Arthur [Smith] coming in there, having kind of like the same athletic attributes, a mobile quarterback, a guy who likes to throw the ball on the run, who can throw the ball on the run,” Peterson said on the Feb. 15 episode of All Things Covered.

But much like Pickett, Peterson was soon not part of the Steelers' plans for 2024, being released by the team just before the start of free agency. Peterson is holding out hope on a potential reunion, however, with the Steelers still a little light at corner and Peterson having a good relationship with Coach T:

“We’ve still got time left on the table,” Peterson told Jim Rome of “The Jim Rome Show.” “Hopefully, I can get something done with the Steelers. That’s the team that I definitely want to play for because I have so much respect for Coach Tomlin.”

So we'll see where things go from here. Pittsburgh is comfortable with their CB room, but that's for now. We know time on the field changes things, with injuries and poor play making coaches and GMs look for answers.

But following the signing of Anthony Averett after a successful rookie minicamp tryout, the role of slot corner may be occupied, leaving Peterson privy to sign elsewhere, or continue his takes on past Steelers QBs.
