The Pittsburgh Steelers' once-promising season has turned oddly familiar again.
The team has lost games they were supposed to win, and now finds itself with a 6-6 record and in a battle for the AFC North title.
The Steelers don't appear to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and they may not even make the playoffs, let alone win a playoff game.
That's why some fans, analysts and even former Steelers stars called for Mike Tomlin and the team to go their separate ways. And while that's not likely, the team still has to make a crucial decision about the head coach.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Steelers will have to meet to discuss whether to pick up his option for the 2027 season.
"After this season, Tomlin's contract will have two years remaining -- 2026 and a team option in 2027. But according to league sources, the Steelers must decide whether to pick up the option on Tomlin's contract by March 1," Schefter wrote.
The Steelers are no longer in control of their destiny to win the AFC North. The fans booed the team at home and even urged them to fire Tomlin, and the head coach admitted that he understood their frustration and actually agreed with them.
The Steelers haven't fired a head coach since 1968, and it sounds highly unlikely that they will do so with Tomlin. But after not winning a playoff game in almost a decade, it's clear that something has to change in Pittsburgh.
