Steelers hire notable former head coach as new offensive coordinator

The Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen a new offensive coordinator, and he is very familiar to NFL fans.

Arthur Smith is expected to be named the new offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Smith was fired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons earlier this year after three 7-10 seasons with the team. He previously enjoyed success as offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, particularly with a run game that was led by Derrick Henry.

The Steelers averaged just 17.9 points per game in 2023 and ranked near the bottom of the NFL in most major offensive categories. They fired former OC Matt Canada in the middle of the season, which was a somewhat unusual move for the franchise.

One area in which the Steelers enjoyed some success was their rushing attack. They ranked 13th in the league with 118.2 rushing yards per game. Pittsburgh has plenty of talent in their backfield with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

Smith drew some criticism in Atlanta for his odd usage of some key skill players, but Mike Tomlin feels the veteran coach has plenty to offer.
