Steelers ILB Cole Holcomb reveals what it's like to be back making plays after thinking he may never play football again

For Cole Holcomb, it has been a long road back to football.

A knee injury that he suffered in the middle of 2023 changed his football career forever, and it took until last week's game against the Jaguars for him to return to live action. It has been over 20 months since his last game.

But if you have watched him play over the last two games, you saw a player who looks reminiscent of the one from the first half of 2023, and that has Cole Holcomb feeling confident...

Cole Holcomb has his confidence back

“Obviously everybody knows I missed last season. I didn’t play a game," Holcomb said after Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs. "So for me, I need to go out there and prove to everybody in the entire NFL that I can still play. That I’m back. I’m just as good as I was before the injury. I’ve got my confidence back. I feel good.”

Holcomb was honest about how difficult his road to recovery had been. Earlier this year, he spoke to the drudgery of the rehab process following that friendly fire from Thursday Night Football almost two years ago...

“It was bad,” Holcomb told the media earlier this year regarding his knee injury. “I know there was that question [of never playing again]. But they just told me, ‘If you go to work and you can come back, you can be good…

“…I love this game. [But] I also just had a kid. They count on you, wife and kid.”

Holcomb was the leading tackler and green dot on the defense before the injury. He was a key part of the revitalization of that position. One that had lost it's way ever since Ryan Shazier's career ended. To see him back and rounding a room that has three capable starters via himself, Payton Wilson and the Pro Bowler Patrick Queen is a terrific sight.

“I thought on the surface it was solid," said Coach Tomlin when asked how Holcomb played after the game. "I don’t have anything other than that from a reactionary standpoint. I certainly will next time we come together.”
