Steelers' Isaac Seumalo Notes Big Change With New OC Arthur Smith: 'Good To Have Coaches' That Are Accountable
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have more new faces on offense than the average NFL team would know what to do with. The quarterbacks and wide receivers rooms, along with a revamped offensive line have many wondering what the unit will look like in 2024. To add some fresh touch to the scheme, Arthur Smith was hired as the organization's new offensive coordinator. He is expected to bring a run-heavy, play-action type of an approach to the group, and it should look a lot different than it had under Matt Canada. There is a sense of optimism as training camp rapidly approaches.

One of the returning leaders is offensive guard Isaac Seumalo. He was the most consistent lineman for the Steelers in 2023 and while he is extremely soft-spoken, he set a great example on the field. Pittsburgh signed him to a a three-year deal in the 2023 offseason. He has proven to be worth every penny as he enters year two in the Steel City.

On Tuesday, he spoke to the media in the locker room as the team reported for week two of Organized Team Activities (OTAs). Chris Adamski from Trib-Live posted part of his interview on social media. He was asked about Smith's arrival and he made it clear that it is very nice to have a coach who holds his players to a very high standard.

"I think he's made everyone super accountable, which, you know, I think starts with the players, but it's good to have [from the] coaches as well. I think he's been consistent in his message, wants guys to take each day to, you know, be a pro and have to come in with an attitude like, 'What can I do today to prove myself to my teammates?'"

It sure is a nice fresh outlook when it comes to the offense. All fans ever heard from Canada was that the offense needed to be better and so did he. It appears as if Smith is bringing a new approach. Accountability is key within any organization and to have it from the new leader of the offense is a big plus and step forward entering 2024.

While many expect the Steelers to be a run-first team under Smith, the play-action passing and surprise element shouldn't be overlooked. When Smith led the Tennessee Titans' offensive unit in 2019 and 2020, Ryan Tannehill performed extraordinarily well. The hope is that the veteran coach can get that out of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Once Canada was fired midseason in 2023, the group started to look better, specifically with Mason Rudolph leading the way. It is hard to believe that the unit won't take a step up with Smith calling the plays and either Wilson or Fields taking the snaps. Seumalo's comments echo a brand new expectation in Pittsburgh when it comes to the offense, which is a welcomed approach by the fan base.

The Steelers' schedule is brutal for the majority of 2024 and there is no doubt that Smith will be tested throughout the 17-game regular season. With his past experience and a new-look offense, there are high expectations for the first time since before Canada was the play-caller. There will be a lot of accountability from the fans outside of the locker room, as well.

Steelers Looking To Change Recent Offensive Reputation In 2024

It goes without saying that not many teams throughout the league feared Pittsburgh's offense since the beginning of the 2021 season. It was bland, predictable and flat out not very good. It has been a long time coming for the group to be completely revamped, and Smith was a critical piece to the puzzle in the 2024 offseason. Time will tell how it turns out, but it certainly feels different with organized practices occurring.
