Steelers linked to risky FA signing

Training camp is already underway, and there has been little to no buzz surrounding Trevon Diggs.

The former All-Pro cornerback hasn't been healthy — or productive — in the past couple of years, and he's also shown some character and coachability issues.

However, a player of his pedigree at such a premium position should still be on multiple teams' radar ahead of the preseason.

That's why NFL.com's Grant Gordon believes he could make a triumphant return pretty soon. With his ties to Mike McCarthy, he argued the Pittsburgh Steelers were a good fit for him.

“The season that stands out in bold print for Diggs’ career was his All-Pro 2021 campaign with the Cowboys and Quinn as his defensive coordinator. Diggs’ head coach was Mike McCarthy and his DB coach was Joe Whitt. Both are in Pittsburgh now,” Gordon wrote. “Diggs likely isn’t getting signed as more than a flier or a depth add. Makes sense it would be a squad with familiar faces.”

This makes sense to a degree, but only if he's just a rotational guy or some insurance.

The Steelers' secondary is already pretty stacked with veteran talent. Even with an aging Jalen Ramsey, they still have Asante Samuel Jr., Jamel Dean, Brandin Echols and rising star Joey Porter Jr.

Diggs used to be one of the league's premier ball-hawks, but he's barely forced any turnovers since his record-breaking season years ago.

He had some run-ins with the Dallas Cowboys last season, to the point they released him before the end of the season.

So, even if McCarthy knows him well, there's no actual incentive for the Steelers to add a problematic figure to the locker room.
