Steelers OC Arthur Smith feeling the love from his players after years of incompetence at play caller
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

While we have to wait and see how effective the 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers offense is, we already know one thing is certain:

It will look entirely different than the past three seasons.

That's not only because of an entirely new QB room, a revamped offensive line and WR corps that has to prove itself, but because of the offensive coordinator.

And according to the players that meet with him most, the presence of Arthur Smith is already being felt:

Wilson & Fields Rave over Smith

“I’ve been able to watch him and experience Coach Arthur Smith over the years, and just his knowledge of the game,  His knowledge of getting people in the right place at the right time. The physicality that he coaches with in terms of all of us players having us play with that mentality. We’re gonna be able to run the ball downhill, obviously. Play-action is going to be key. I think just doing the right things in the right moments. Situation football is everything. If we can do that as a collective on offense, defense and special teams… We got a chance, and that’s all you can ask for," Russell Wilson told reporters on Tuesday.

Smith takes a hit for his tenure as HC of the Atlanta Falcons, but you show me a good offense with a bad QB in the past four years...

You can't.

The best QB Smith worked with? Ryan Tannehill.

You know, the QB that Miami traded to be a backup in Tennessee yet became the starter and led the team to number one overall seeds and AFC Championship appearances.

That obviously entices his new QBs, including Justin Fields:

“Arthur, he’s very meticulous in the way he explains the offense," Fields told reports on Tuesday. "Very detailed, and we’ve kind of been focusing on setting the foundation, not really getting too far ahead of ourselves. We're just setting that base and not working too far ahead, but also getting a good amount to where guys can learn their processes and know the 'why' behind certain things.”

The words meticulous, detailed and process-oriented are foreign to the definition of the Steelers offensive players that carried over from the past three seasons.

And those players said as much before OTAs even began, with it all coming to fruition now that they are on the field:

“What I hear coming out of the Steelers is that players absolutely love Arthur Smith’s offense,” Mark Kaboly of The Athletic wrote on X. “One told me that it is unreal."

Now, all of this is for not if the Steelers start 0-3 and average 15 points per game. And sure the honeymoon phase of Smith's tenure in Pittsburgh is still ongoing, but trust me when I say this offense will be much, much better.
