Steelers' Omar Khan Happy With WR Room But Still Trying To Find Safety Net

The Pittsburgh Steelers ' wide receiver room continues to be talked about as the 2025 season rapidly approaches. As preseason nears its conclusion, the Steelers have their eyes set on getting off to a hot start in Week 1 against the New York Jets. With George Pickens no longer in Pittsburgh, the focus has shifted to how the remaining and new additions in the receiver room can step up and help stabilize an offense looking to make an immediate impact in 2025. Early impressions suggest the room will need consistency and big-play ability to give Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers an easier transition to Pittsburgh.

Some pundits still believe the Steelers could use additional help at wide receiver. DK Metcalf , Roman Wilson, and Calvin Austin III are expected to be the main contributors in 2025, but questions remain about depth and reliable options beyond the top three. Without Pickens, the team faces added pressure to find a true WR2 who can stretch the field, draw coverage, and complement the skill set of Metcalf and Austin. 

Steelers insider Mark Kaboly believes General Manager Omar Khan is aware of these concerns and still wants some safety in the wide receiver group. Kaboly revealed during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday afternoon that while the team is confident in its top options, Khan and the front office are closely evaluating any opportunities to strengthen the room. 

"I really do think they're going to try to go find a receiver," Kaboly said while speaking wit h 93.7 The Fan's Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey on Wednesday evening. "I'm still with that. It's not gonna be anybody of quite significance. It's gonna be a Robert Woods-esque type of guy."

Kaboly doesn’t view Pittsburgh heading into the 2025 season without another move at wide receiver, though he cautions fans it’s unlikely to be a big-name player. 

Instead, the team could target a veteran similar to Robert Woods, a seasoned receiver who can compete for a role and provide depth within the wide receiver room. Woods is also currently fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster.

"I think they're pretty much happy with what they have right now, but they need somebody just in case," Kaboly said.

Whether through trades, free agent signings, or internal development, Pittsburgh is expected to prioritize having multiple capable receivers who can step up if needed, ensuring the offense remains dynamic and ready for the challenges of the 2025 season. Time is starting to run out as the regular season continues to approach quickly.

Steelers' Wide Receiver Room Causing Slight Concern Once Again

If the Steelers want to head into the 2025 season with an extra safety net, finding a veteran wide receiver could be a wise move. That said, it may not be considered necessary by others within the organization. Veteran Gabe Davis has visited twice this offseason, but has left without a contract both times. Of course another option could be veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Neither of those options are super exciting, but they do provide that safety net Khan is looking for.

Analysts point out that in today’s NFL, having a deep, versatile receiving corps can be the difference between a high-functioning offense and one that struggles in crucial situations. Steelers fans know all too well what a struggling offense can mean. If this offense struggles at all in the 2025 season, it will be a very tough hill to climb. However, if the offense proves serviceable, the defense could carry the team.
