As was the case at this time one year ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting for a decision from free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Even though the Steelers’ 2025 season ended nearly four months ago, Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t been able to make a final decision on his playing future. Most assume that it’s Pittsburgh or retirement.
But what if Rodgers gets an offer from a different team that he can’t refuse?
On Tuesday, the Steelers placed the UFA tender on the 42-year-old Rodgers. Per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the Steelers would receive a compensatory pick if the four-time MVP signs with another club.
Additionally, the tender gives Rodgers the opportunity to receive a 10 percent salary increase. That would pay him around $15 million for 2026, Pryor added.
In 2025, Rodgers led Pittsburgh to a 10-7 record and AFC North division crown. He completed 65.7 percent of pass attempts for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
Earlier this week, news broke that Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix underwent a second procedure on his ankle. The Broncos still expect him to be ready for the start of training camp.
But Pittsburgh sports reporter Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan shared a fascinating theory on his X/Twitter account. Fillipponi wonders whether Nix’s injury is worse than initially believed and whether Pittsburgh is nervous about Denver potentially swooping in to land Rodgers.
Conspiracy theory: Bo Nix injury and recovery is worse than originally feared. Now the Steelers are worried Aaron Rodgers might weigh an offer from the Broncos. Thus the tender offer yesterday to protect themselves in the event he leaves them high and dry. https://t.co/tX7K6IVupB

This idea may sound crazy, but it makes sense for Denver to consider Rodgers if Nix’s injury is much more serious than they’re willing to disclose. Of course, it’s not an option if Nix is actually on track in his recovery.
In reality, it’s probably Pittsburgh or retirement for the future Hall of Famer. Fortunately for Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers appear more than happy to wait for his decision.
