The Pittsburgh Steelers have attacked free agency with the goal of shoring up position groups that needed a starter. Pittsburgh completed a trade that made Michael Pittman Jr. a Steeler and have signed vital free agents like Jamel Dean and Rico Dowdle. These acquisitions allow for Pittsburgh to attack the NFL Draft with confidence that it can pick the best player available. The Steelers will continue a theme that has been a part of their history: acquire starters and pick who's the most talented. The Steelers did just that when picking up a new cornerback in former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Dean.
The Black and Gold have been looking for an upper echelon CB2 to pair with their rising star, Joey Porter Jr. They opted to ink Dean to a three-year, $36.75 million contract. The Steelers have been notorious for signing veteran cornerbacks towards the back ends of their career in free agency.
Pittsburgh has signed the likes of Darius Slay and Patrick Peterson to bolster their secondary, however, neither of them worked out like the organization had hoped. Slay did not even make it out of the 2025 season and was released.
Dean will turn 30 during the 2026 season, and that means crossing the imaginary threshold for cornerbacks in the NFL when it comes to age. The Steelers have failed in signing veteran corners and this acquisition could come back to bite them. General Manager Omar Khan might be taking a big risk. ESPN's Aaron Schatz added his opinion regarding potential concerns about Dean.
"Cornerback statistics are notoriously inconsistent from season to season, so you can't count on Dean to have another outstanding season in 2026, but he was above average in 2024 as well and will turn 30 years old in October," Schatz wrote.
Pittsburgh can't be certain that Dean will replicate his elite 2024 and 2025 seasons and that could pose a big risk to the secondary. The Steelers cannot keep relying on Porter and have to add pieces around him. Porter's due for a contract extension and locking up help could entice him, but the team putting all of its confidence in Dean may be a huge risk, especially given its history at the position.
Dean had an incredible 2025 season, he had three interceptions to go along with nine pass deflections. He too, had very similar advanced coverage metrics to Porter, who considered one of the league's best. The former Buc held quarterbacks to a mere 63.1 rating when targeted. Pittsburgh was able to pick up Dean on a relatively team friendly deal compared to some of the lesser cornerback talent that has gone in free agency.
However, corners can drop off production in a blink of an eye. The organization desperately wants to revamp a defense that let down fans last year, as they were the highest-paid unit in the league, but underperformed mightily. Dean needs to remain consistent to shut down opposing receivers, especially in the AFC North with elite talent like Ja'Marr Chase and Zay Flowers.
The Pittsburgh secondary desperately needs another shut down corner. Dean could be the missing piece of the puzzle in fixing a Steelers defense that struggled last year. However, the risk looms over the heads of Steelers brass and the ghosts of Peterson and Slay still haunt a secondary that is begging for another corner beside their up and coming star.
Pittsburgh has over 10 draft picks this year and have the ability to add another corner within the top 100. The Steelers have three third-round picks and could use one of them on a young corner. The Black and Gold can add to their depth at corner and ensure there is another defensive back that can develop. If Porter chooses to leave after this year, a young corner with a year under his belt isn't such a bad idea.
