Steelers' Roman Wilson Breaks His Silence After Crazy Catch: 'Go Get It Mentality'

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft with hopes that he could make an immediate impact as a rookie. Wilson showed strong potential coming out of Michigan, but an early injury in training camp quickly changed his trajectory. Head Coach Mike Tomlin explained that Wilson wasn’t able to keep up as the season progressed, and his rookie year turned into more of a developmental season.

That changed on Thursday when Wilson made a highlight-reel catch during practice. He went up for a jump ball against Joey Porter Jr. and came down with one of the most impressive grabs of the day.

The moment quickly made the rounds on social media, giving fans a glimpse of his potential. On Friday, Wilson addressed the media and talked about the catch, signaling that he is ready to move forward and earn a bigger role in the Steelers’ offense.

"Just a one-on-one deep ball. Just a 'go get it' mentality. It was a good rep," Wilson said of the play, via the Steelers' website. "That was a great play. I love when the fans are out here. I love their reactions to everything, the good and the bad. And I feel like every rep I take out there, I can build from it, no matter what it is."

The energy around Steelers training camp feels noticeably different heading into the 2025 season. Much of that excitement comes from the aggressive moves General Manager Omar Khan made to upgrade the roster.

The addition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has brought a new level of confidence to the offense, and it gives Wilson a real opportunity to have a breakout year in Pittsburgh.

"I really love how competitive it is this year," Wilson said. "Guys are getting after it. I love to be a part of it. Feels good to be back."

After a rough start to his NFL career, Wilson is now entering his second season with much higher expectations. He dealt with an early injury and missed most of his rookie year, but with the wide receiver room wide open following the departure of Pickens, the Steelers are counting on Wilson to step up and become a reliable target in the passing game.

Steelers' Roman Wilson Now Heating Up

His highlight-reel catch on Thursday at camp, when he leaped over cornerback Porter to make an impressive grab, could be the turning point he needed. It was a flash of the talent Pittsburgh saw when they drafted him, and it should serve as a boost to both his confidence and the belief fans have in his potential to help reshape the offense.

Many pundits who saw the catch live said it changed their view of Wilson. They already knew he was talented, but seeing that play made them wonder just how talented he truly is. They didn’t expect him to be capable of making a jump-ball catch like that, and now the curiosity surrounding Wilson is surging.
