Steelers' starting QB job is Mitchell Trubisky's 'to lose'?

Those hoping to see any sign that the Pittsburgh Steelers will enter training camp planning to hold a legitimate quarterback competition between free-agent signing Mitchell Trubisky, first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett and career backup Mason Rudolph should probably just move on.

Earlier on Wednesday, Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review became the latest person among a group that includes All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward to suggest since the springtime months that Trubisky will essentially have to fall on his face in upcoming workouts and preseason games to lose the starting gig to either Pickett or Rudolph. As Alex Kozora noted for Steelers Depot, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler echoed that take during his latest appearance on the "Keyshawn, JWill, and Max Show."

"It's looking like if there is a favorite, it's Mitchell Trubisky," Fowler explained. "He's positioned himself well. He had a good spring. The feeling out of Pittsburgh is it's his job to lose. Kenny Pickett's gonna play. Just depends on when."

Trubisky remained comfortably atop the depth chart from the start of spring workouts through the end of mandatory minicamp. Pickett, meanwhile, was the club's third-choice option.

Just about every knowledgeable individual continues to insist that it's more likely Pickett will be an inactive spectator for Week 1 in September than Pittsburgh's QB1 at that time. Any fans still keeping fingers crossed that the rookie will somehow play sooner than later would do well to set realistic expectations for his debut pro season.
