Steelers' Stephon Tuitt defiant in response to critics of plan to stand during anthem

Several NFL players have stated their plan to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. However, at least one player has made it clear that he will be standing for the flag, as Steelers defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt explained on Twitter why he won't be kneeling.

"Also I’m not kneeling for the flag and screw anybody who have a problem with that," Tuitt tweeted. "My grandmother was a immigrant from the Carribean and age worked her a00 off to bring 20 people over the right way. She had no money and educated herself to be a nurse. She living good now."

Of course, few would argue with Tuitt's right to stand during the national anthem, as it's expected that many players will continue to stand even as their teammates kneel. However, this appears to be more personal for Tuitt, as he seems to feel that kneeling during the anthem is disrespectful, specifically given all that his grandmother sacrificed to put him in a position to succeed. It's a complex issue but ultimately, Tuitt is doing what he feels is right.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told the media that he would be supporting any players that chose to kneel. Tomlin stated that he would stand by whatever kind of expression players decide to make, "as long as it’s done so thoughtfully and with class."

"Our position is simple: We’re going to support our players and their willingness to participate in this, whether it’s statements or actions," Tomlin said.
