The New England Patriots always knew that their Stefon Diggs experiment would be short-lived.
They structured his contract so that they could move on from him after one year without taking any dead money, and that's exactly what they did. Now, with Diggs cleared from his legal situation and training camp right around the corner, it's time he finds a new home.
Considering that and given his ties to the Washington Commanders as a Maryland native, his hometown team has been floated as a potential destination. Notably, even he thinks that might be in the works.
"That’s what everybody is talking about right now. We gonna talk about it real soon though," Diggs said, per ESPN's Mina Kimes.
Diggs clearly isn't getting any younger, and he will always come with baggage and off-field distractions. That said, he proved last season that he can still make an impact. While he didn't necessarily stay out of trouble in his personal life, he was reportedly a good teammate in Foxborough.
The Commanders could use another reliable pass-catcher opposite Terry McLaurin for the third year of the Jayden Daniels era, especially if they don't bring Deebo Samuel back.
Expecting Diggs to flirt with 1,200 receiving yards or be an All-Pro-caliber guy might be wishful thinking, but he'd certainly be an upgrade over what they currently have. Spotrac projects his market value at $13.8 million a year, but it's highly unlikely that he'll get that much money at this point in the offseason.
