Stephen A. Smith Doesn't Hold Back On ESPN Firing NFL Analyst

Prior to the 2024 NFL season, ESPN let go of a few big-name analysts. On Tuesday night, Stephen A. Smith offered his thoughts on one particular move.

Back in August, ESPN fired former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. He helped out the network with its college football and NFL coverage. Not only was he a color commentator on Saturdays, he was a studio analyst for  Monday Night Countdown.

"It hurt me for them, not because they need me because they don't," Griffin said during an appearance on Rich Eisen's radio show. "That's the thing about this business - nobody needs anyone. But just because we were so close, and we were kind of getting the chance to rekindle that fire. That had already been assigned."

Griffin had Smith on his Outta Pocket podcast this week to discuss a plethora of topics, including his departure from ESPN.

Griffin had an issue with Smith "dragging his reputation" through the mud on a recent episode of First Take.

Smith responded to that comment by letting Griffin know that he never wanted him to leave ESPN. In fact, he's shocked another network hasn't signed the former NFL quarterback.

"First of all let me state for the record, at First Take, you did a hell of a job. Secondly, I think you are a talent on the airwaves," Smith said. "I don't know why others haven't gobbled you up. Number 3, I didn't want you gone. I said that too."

Smith might have an issue with certain comments that Griffin has made online, but that was a classy message.

Speaking of Griffin's future, it's unclear where we'll see him next. He was part of Netflix's NFL coverage on Christmas Day, but that was just a one-day special.
