Steve Spurrier says Tennessee legend Peyton Manning was 'very interested' in the Florida Gators as a recruit
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Can you imagine Peyton Manning playing for the Florida Gators in college instead of the Tennessee Vols?

Not a great thought if you're a Vols fan.

But it was a scenario that was on the table for Manning as a recruit.

And according to former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier, Manning was "very interested" in the Gators.

Manning, according to Spurrier, even felt that the way Florida "threw the ball around" was "best for him".

Spurrier recounted the Gators' pursuit of Manning during a recent appearance on the Another Dooley Noted Podcast

"Well, he was very interested for a while," said Spurrier. "And he and his dad came, I think it was the spring game or something, and he admitted that the way we threw the ball around was, you know, best for him. But then the opportunity, it was better at Tennessee because Danny (Wuerffel) and Eric Kresser were here. So, in hindsight, we're all glad he went to Tennessee."

Podcast host Pat Dooley then pointed out that Manning went 0-4 against Florida, which drew a smirk (of course) from Spurrier.

"But they they only lost about three conference games during his time (at Tennessee), all to us," said Spurrier. "They beat everyone else."

Fortunately for everyone in East Tennessee, Manning decided that playing for Phillip Fulmer was a better situation than playing for Spurrier.
