Strahan vs. Eli: Giants Ownership Talks Get Big Update

It’s been an active offseason for the New York Giants as general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll hope to save their jobs with a competitive 2025 campaign. They revamped the defense and ushered in the next franchise quarterbacks with the second chance owner John Mara granted them after their 3-14 finish in 2024.

Mara is hoping to change his reputation as a quick-to-fire owner, but he’s also looking to change the dynamics of the team’s ownership in itself. The Mara and Tisch families are selling a notable, but non-controlling portion of the franchise, and fans have been quick to speculate as to which former players could make a real bid.

That speculation was headlined by Eli Manning, but Sportico’s reporting reveals that Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan could replace him as a candidate for the Giants’ ownership group.

“Former New York Giants star Michael Strahan and billionaire Marc Lasry have teamed up to pursue an investment in the NFL team, according to multiple people familiar with the talks,” Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams wrote.

“Roughly 10% of the Giants is up for sale, and Strahan and Lasry are working together to purchase a piece of that, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the details are private. The Giants’ current owners, the Mara and Tisch families, are looking to spread that stake around to two or three wealthy individuals and families—as opposed to private equity.”

Like Manning, Strahan is one of the most beloved players in New York’s extensive history. He’s a Super Bowl champion, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and one of American media's most recognizable faces, given his roles on Fox’s football coverage and various morning shows.

According to Sportico, Manning and Strahan won’t join forces in a larger ownership group due to potential business conflicts.

Strahan will be teaming with Lasry instead, which might not be totally divorced from the private equity Mara would prefer to avoid.

“Lasry is worth $1.9 billion, according to Forbes,” Soshnick and Novy-Williams continued. Lasry’s son, Alex, is the CEO of the New York/New Jersey host committee for the 2026 World Cup, which is hosting games (including the Cup final) at MetLife Stadium.”

Strahan has the goodwill of the fanbase, crafty business acumen, and football immortality on his side. The New York faithful will eagerly await the team’s decision as the offseason continues.
