Super Bowl Moon stats: Does the moon phase favor the Chiefs or the Eagles on Sunday?

Hi, weird moon people. Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles fans don't know me or the weird moon thing that I do, but they're about to find out.

I cover the Detroit Lions and for the last two seasons, I've been known as the moon man for using moon phases to help predict whether or not the Lions would win a game. The results have been shockingly on point, so AtoZ Sports asked me to do one for the Super Bowl.

Here's what I found. By the way, did I mention this was weird?

Moon phase for Super Bowl Sunday

We're looking at a waxing gibbous moon on Sunday night. That means the moon illuminated, but not all of it. Usually, it's that light moon that's half-covered.

Waxing Gibbous Super Bowl history

10 Super Bowls have been played under a waxing gibbous moon and it seems to favor the NFC a little bit more. Six of those games were won by an NFC team. That includes the last one in 2022 when the Rams beat the Bengals.

The last time an AFC team won was in 2017 when the Patriots had their legendary comeback win over the Falcons.

Neither the Chiefs nor the Eagles have played in a Super Bowl during a waxing gibbous moon. So neither really has an edge there.

What are the Eagles and Chiefs Waxing gibbous records this year?

Both teams played on waxing gibbous moons multiple times during the 2024 season. The Chiefs went 3-0 this year. Not bad at all. The Eagles went 4-1. Their one loss came in Week 2 against the Falcons. They've won the last four in a row and that includes their Wild Card win over the Packers in January.

When was the last time these two teams played on a waxing gibbous moon and who won?

The last time was all the way back in September 2009. The Eagles put a 34-14 hurting on the Chiefs that day.
