Brian Schottenheimer's first roster cutdown as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is going to be an interesting one for many reasons, and one will be how the tight end depth chart lands.
While there won't be any surprises about the room in general with Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford as the main three, with Princeton Fant, Rivaldo Fairweather and John Stephens Jr. set to be ones who might find themselves either on the practice squad or cut altogether.
But that doesn't really move the needle with me.
What is the order in which the depth chart is finalized?
Based on training camp alone, Spann-Ford, prior to his injury had moved ahead of Schoonmaker to be the backup tight end. That is a serious piece of news, folks.
And had it not been for his injury, Spann-Ford could have put even more space between himself and Luke. So yes, Ferguson is the starter, but Schoonmaker and Spann-Ford, as the backups, are a solid trio. I'm interested to see if the Cowboys have the grit to put Spann-Ford above Schoonmaker because he deserves to be.
As for Stephens Jr., Fairweathe r, and maybe Fant, one might be lucky enough to land on the practice squad, with Princeton's monster mauling of an Atlanta Falcons defender in the third preseason game still running through our mind.
So much so that Fant might even squeeze onto the active roster as the fourth tight end if Dallas chooses to carry that many.
Ferguson, and then I think Spann-Ford and Schoonmaker make up the room, and if you want to include Fant, I'll listen.
But how the depth chart lands here is going to make for a fascinating watch.
