As much as general manager Brad Holmes doesn't care to entertain the idea, the Detroit Lions are in a proverbial "Super Bowl window" with the roster as it is right now. Back-to-back division titles have yielded an NFC Championship Game appearance and a one-and-done playoff exit as the No. 1 seed, so that window has narrowed.
That being said, the Lions' Super Bowl window is still open. They still have one of the best rosters in the league, built around a group young players who will remain intact for at least the next couple years.
Rob Parker's roots as a media presence were in Detroit. For better or worse he's not afraid to offer a controversial opinion, now as a co-host of a national show on Fox Sports Radio.
When Matthew Stafford was the Lions' quarterback, and the team continued its then-losing ways, Parker came up with the unflattering nickname "Stat Padford" to lament Stafford's record against winning teams and what he perceived as meaningless stat padding. As if the Lions' shortcomings were all Stafford's fault, and not the function of a dysfunctional organization around him.
Parker appeared on Thursday's episode of "Maggie and Perloff" with Maggie Gray and Andrew Perloff. Of course the Lions were a prime topic with OTAs going this week, and unsurprisingly Parker took things in a negative direction.
"Unfortunately, this is where I turn into the negative Nelly, because I think their window has opened and closed, the Lions", Parker said. "They blew it against the 49ers, chance to go to the Super Bowl. Dan Campbell blew that game for them. Last year, don't forget, they had the best record, home-field throughout the playoffs in the NFC. Let a rookie quarterback come in, they were 9.5-point favorites in that game and lost."
"If you're telling me that they're gonna be back next year or this coming season, I can't buy into it," Parker continued. "The division is getting better. I just think that they lost both coordinators, so it's gonna be a year of adjustment. So, I think the Lions had a nice window for two years; unfortunately, it's closed."
Dan Campbell's fourth down aggressiveness in that NFC Championship Game against the 49ers did not particularly cost the Lions, from a win probability standpoint. But don't try telling Parker that.
As expected, Detroit fans pulled no punches when Perloff posted the clip of Parker's comments about the Lions on Twitter. Comments like "Rob Parker is an idiot. Everyone knows that", "Long time hater*" and "Rob Parker’s window of relevant sports takes has closed" are a small sample.
At this point, Parker pretty much speaks into an echo chamber of irrelevancy for Detroit sports fans. But if he was aiming to re-trigger Lions fans with his recent comments, he accomplished that mission while creating attention for himself.
