Teammate's famous father addresses future of 49ers' Brock Purdy

Three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey, the father of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, believes that Brock Purdy is more than just a "game manager" and is a true franchise quarterback.

"He's going to be playing for the 49ers for a long, long time," Ed McCaffrey said about Purdy during a recent conversation with ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III, as David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone shared.

While Christian McCaffrey inked a new deal with the 49ers earlier this month, Purdy will become eligible to sign a contract extension after the 2024 season. That agreement could impact San Francisco's ability to pay other starters, considering Purdy began this past February as a finalist for the regular-season Most Valuable Player Award.

According to Pro Football Reference, Purdy finished the 2023 regular season ranked first among qualified players with a 72.8 adjusted QBR, a 113.0 passer rating, an average of 9.6 yards gained per pass attempt and a 54.7% passing success rate. He later was just one play away from guiding the 49ers to a Super Bowl LVIII win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

During his chat with Griffin, Ed McCaffrey praised Purdy's "ability to process, anticipate and react" while facing NFL defenses.

"I think he has intelligence," Ed McCaffrey added about Purdy. "He's more mobile than what you would think. And I think that was noticeable last season. He got out of a lot of pressures, rolled left, rolled right, stepped up in the pocket, kept his eyes downfield, threw with anticipation, goes through his progression quickly."

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports seemed to agree with Ed McCaffrey when Benjamin ranked Purdy second in offseason quarterback power rankings beneath only Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes. Purdy may have to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February 2025 to eliminate forever the "game manager" label that hovered over him throughout last season. Still, Ed McCaffrey sounds ready to pay the 24-year-old today.

As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chiefs (+550) and 49ers (+600) as the betting favorites to win Super Bowl LIX. Fans could enjoy a championship rematch that also proves to be a preview of what's to come when the Chiefs play at the 49ers on Oct. 20.
