The Tennessee Titans are gearing up for their second game of the NFL preseason, as they are set to take on the Seattle Seahawks. Ahead of their preseason matchup against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Titans made a move to bring in a new running back following some recent injuries within the running back room.
“Sources: The #Titans are signing veteran RB and special teamer D’Ernest Johnson to a 1-year contract. Johnson has over 1,000 career rushing yards, 50+ catches for 400+ yards, and can contribute as a returner with over 900 career return yards,” Jordan Schultz reported early on Wednesday morning.
Johnson is a player who hasn’t finished a season with more than 20 rushes since 2024, when he was with the Titans’ rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars. This doesn’t mean that Johnson can’t still ball out when he is needed.
This isn’t a move for a running back who is going to be a starter on game days, but this move could lead to a change in the 53-man roster. This is a big deal because of the fact that the Titans needed more depth in the room following at least one running back being banged up in around 75% of practices of fall camp thus far. The Titans have no reason to risk their running back room when they can make a move and add a player like Johnson, who hasn’t been in camp and is a fresh body that can make some plays if needed.
When it comes to the running back room, Johnson is someone who can be a quality role player, while also being an added veteran presence. This will be big for the likes of Tyjae Spears and Nick Singleton, as both players will have the chance to learn from Johnson and pick up on the things he does, including his receiving strategy, which has been a key part of his game since becoming an NFL running back.
