Jayden Reed, the Green Bay Packers' current WR1, is in a pickle. He's supposed to be one of the teams' most reliable playmakers this season, one that's suddenly become majorly important after the acquisition of Micah Parsons right before the start of the 2025 season. He, Romeo Doubs, and rookie Matthew Golden have to make Jordan Love's job easy this season.
Reed is already, through no fault of his own, seemingly unable to keep up his end of the bargain. News dropped on Wednesday ahead of the Packers' Week 1 bout with the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field at Reed's lingering foot fracture makes him a big question mark for that game.
Reed, the Packers' 2023 2nd round pick, had 857 receiving yards and six touchdowns last year for Green Bay, acting as the teams' best receiver by far. He would likely be getting guarded by Terrion Arnold in Week 1, as Arnold has risen up the depth chart to become the Lions' CB1.
Now, it sounds like Arnold is going to get a huge break against the Packers to open up the season.
Reed's foot injury became a storyline last week, after ESPN Milwaukee's Jason Wilde reported that his fracture is one that typically requires season-ending surgery. Despite that, Reed was planning on playing on the foot, anyway.
It was always going to be a huge gamble, especially since the Packers have Super Bowl aspirations all of the sudden. Reed risking his long term health to play Week 1 might not be the best move for him or the franchise. And, that could explain why he didn't even bother practicing ahead of the big divisional matchup.
Green Bay has a serious issue at WR if Reed is out. A lot will be on the shoulders of Golden, Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks, and on the backs of Josh Jacobs and Emanuel Wilson. Perhaps the defense makes up for it, but you need to post points on the board against a hard-nosed Lions secondary that's healthy for the first time since mid-year in 2024.
Arnold has to be absolutely itching to get on the field if his assignment is no longer on Reed. That'll almost guarantee a huge first game for the new head of the secondary's snake.
