Terry McLaurin is done playing nice as frustrations build regarding his new contract, or lack thereof. And Washington Commanders fans might not like what comes next if something doesn't get rubbed-stamped before training camp.
McLaurin was extremely candid when speaking to the media on Tuesday after a promotional shoot with Easterns Automotive Group. There was visible dejection and surprise about the way those in power are handling his extension. He feels undervalued after giving so much to the organization. He also revealed that no contact had been made with his agent in over a month.
Fans weren't particularly concerned about this situation until McLaurin broke his silence. Teammates rallied around the wideout on social media. Head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels have stayed in touch, offering their support while the business side of things gets worked out.
The former third-round pick out of Ohio State pleaded his case, acknowledging his age but also rightfully highlighting that he has shown no signs of slowing down. And make no mistake, McLaurin intended to put Adam Peters on the clock with a veiled threat about further action to get what he's earned.
Without any progress in discussions it's kind of hard to see how I step on the field. I'm not dismissing [age] completely. There are data points to support that, but how come it's not OK to say this may be a different case and based on what he's proven, showing no signs of deterioration, I feel that should be acknowledged as well. People making it seem like I need to start getting fitted for a walker and a cane. My game is going to mature in a great way. I guess you can say there is a point of no return. I don't think it's at that now but … time is kind of ticking.Terry McLaurin via ESPN
Holding out of training camp is a realistic possibility if McLaurin's representatives and the Commanders can't find some middle ground. That involves substantial fines, but it's a high-stakes situation that demands drastic action.
It could get even worse than that.
McLaurin loves the franchise, but if this resentment escalates, the second-team All-Pro could submit a trade request. That is the worst-case scenario for everyone involved.
Placing a trade request to the team doesn't mean McLaurin is guaranteed to leave. Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and others have done the same to get their money. It just piles on the pressure and proves that the two-time Pro Bowler is serious.
But that seems pretty obvious already.
Peters still has time. He'd be wise to resume negotiations immediately. The floor is $30 million per season. That's the current market and something McLaurin's overall influence deserves. This is not the time to penny pinch when the Commanders have so much ahead of them in 2025.
This should hopefully get resolved before camp. If not, the Commanders will have an even bigger problem on their hands.
