Texans Make Announcement After Landing 3-Time Pro Bowler

The Houston Texans have finalized a roster adjustment that coincides with the return of one of their most recognizable former stars. Jadeveon Clowney is officially back with the franchise that selected him first overall more than a decade ago, and the corresponding move involves veteran wide receiver DJ Turner.

The Texans have placed Turner on the reserve/injured list and announced the move on Tuesday morning in an official release.

Clowney’s return (he was originally drafted No. 1 overall by Houston back in 2014) creates the kind of numbers crunch every NFL team faces during training camp. With several recent additions already on the roster, the Texans needed to open a spot.

Turner arrived in Houston only weeks earlier, signing just before the start of training camp after drawing interest from the club in June.

A former undrafted free agent who began his career with the Las Vegas Raiders, he entered a crowded wide-receiver group built largely through the draft and internal development. An injury setback then altered his standing and provided the opening the Texans used to accommodate Clowney.

Under NFL rules, a player on the reserve/injured list does not count against the 53-man active roster, though his salary still counts against the salary cap. He must miss a minimum of four games.

Teams may designate a limited number of players to return from injured reserve during the season, and once cleared to practice a player has 21 days to be activated, placed on season-ending injured reserve, released, or traded.

The roster cutdown deadline of Aug. 30 looms as a practical checkpoint. If the Texans do not designate Turner to return by that date, he would remain on injured reserve for the remainder of the year. The club also retains the option to waive him from the list.

Should he clear waivers, he would revert to the team’s injured reserve, at which point the sides could negotiate an injury settlement. Such an agreement would prevent Turner from rejoining Houston for a period defined by the settlement plus an additional three weeks.

The move underscores the practical realities of roster construction as camps progress and veteran free-agent signings continue to reshape depth charts.

Clowney’s return brings proven pass-rush production and institutional familiarity; Turner’s placement on injured reserve creates the necessary space while leaving open several future pathways for both the player and the organization.

Further clarity on Turner’s status is expected in the coming weeks as the Texans refine their roster ahead of the regular season.
