Texans Make Trent Brown Decision After David Montgomery Trade
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans may have started the 2025 season with three straight losses, but a league-best defense helped them finish the regular season on a nine-game winning streak, ending at 12–5. While the defense continued its dominance in the playoffs, Houston fell in the divisional round against the New England Patriots, with the offense largely to blame as C. J. Stroud threw four interceptions.

The Texans have not wasted time correcting those issues. They acquired running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, a 2026 fourth-round pick, and a 2027 seventh-round pick, helping boost a rushing attack that ranked 22nd in the league in yards per game.

Now, the Texans have also reached an agreement with veteran tackle Trent Brown.

"OT Trent Brown and the Houston Texans reached agreement today on a one-year extension worth up to $7 million, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

The move comes after Houston traded two offensive linemen, first sending Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick, and then dealing Scruggs to the Lions. However, both trades cannot be finalized until next Wednesday at 4 p.m., when the 2026 league year officially begins.

Brown, meanwhile, was with the Texans last season on a one-year, $3 million deal. He was released during roster cuts at the end of August before re-signing to the team’s 53-man roster in October.

While injuries limited him early, he was impressive when healthy, starting seven games and allowing the sixth-lowest pressure rate (7.1 percent) among right tackles with at least 200 pass-blocking reps, according to Next Gen Stats, from Weeks 10 through 16.

Brown was originally a seventh-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers and has appeared in 110 games with 103 starts for the 49ers, Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and Texans. He will turn 33 next month and brings stability and veteran presence to the offensive line protecting Stroud.
