With the start of OTAs, that means there will be increased attention on the coaching staffs of all 32 NFL teams, and new Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley was subject to some of that attention earlier this week. The offensive guru was named as one of ten names to know going into the 2025 NFL season by ESPN writer Ben Solak in his article "100 days to the NFL season: Things to know, predictions."
Caley comes to lead the Houston offense after spending a decade in the college game and then the past ten years in the NFL, coaching for the New England Patriots from 2015-2022 and the Los Angeles Rams from 2022-2024.
Solak said he thinks Caley is a name to watch because of his time spent under both Bill Belichick during his New England tenure and his time under Sean McVay in Los Angeles. Solak said he usually doesn't like coaches that come off the tree later because they usually rise due to the departure of others, but Caley's experience with both Belichick and McVay makes him different.
"I'm always hesitant about later branches plucked off coaching trees," Solak wrote about Caley in his article. "The first few Sean McVay assistants probably have the goods, but the fourth, fifth and sixth options were probably in the back of the line for a reason. But Caley, who spent the past two years in the McVay incubator, was a longtime offensive coach for the Patriots before joining the Rams, so he isn't really a continuing chip off a chip off a chip off the block."

Solak backed his choice of Caley later, mentioning that the coaching change could be big for a Texans team that seemed to be hampered by bad coaching and gameplanning at points last season.
"No offense was held back more by coaching errors last season than Houston's unit," Solak said. "If Caley is even league average as a Year 1 playcaller, expect the Texans to finally deliver on their 2024 preseason hype."
This praise from Solak came the day before the start of Texans OTAs, and Caley is getting praise from his players as well. Houston wide receiver Nico Collins called Caley a "playmaker" for how he knows how to get the ball in his best player's hands at the right time.
Collins said that the offense is still in the learning stage at the moment, but, in the words of Collins, "once we do that man, we're good."
