While the Houston Texans have exercised the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to the contract for quarterback C.J. Stroud, Texans owner Cal McNair gave no hint in early April that the club was close to signing Stroud to a lengthy extension this offseason.
During a Monday news conference, Texans general manager Nick Caserio addressed Stroud's future with the organization.
"I don’t really think it affects his future," Caserio said about picking up Stroud's option, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "I mean, he’s our quarterback. We’ve said that from the beginning. [Head coach DeMeco Ryans] and I have both said it. I think it was more of a procedural thing. I don’t want to say it was a no-brainer, but it was kind of a no-brainer. Glad he’s here. Again, it’s more part of the process."
Making more of a financial commitment to Stroud this spring may be less of a "no-brainer" call after he threw five interceptions and lost two of five fumbles in Houston's two playoff games this past January. Four of those picks occurred in the first half of the Texans' 28-16 divisional-round loss at the New England Patriots that dropped Stroud's career postseason record to 3-3.
Stroud has seemingly regressed from when he earned Offensive Rookie of the Year Award honors for the 2023 season, so much so that some NFL executives have sounded alarms about the team possibly paying the 24-year-old beyond the terms of his existing deal. Meanwhile, Ryans insisted earlier in April that Stroud has been "dialed in to the offseason and really working" since January. Caserio echoed that take on Monday.
"We’re excited about his offseason," Caserio added about Stroud. "He’s had a good approach, had a good attitude here. He’s put a lot of work in March, April, so excited to have him around for the spring and excited to keep moving forward."
It remains to be seen how excited Stroud will feel about his future with the Texans if he doesn't receive a lucrative extension offer before the 2026 campaign gets underway in September.
