Texans part ways with embattled WR Diontae Johnson

The Houston Texans released Diontae Johnson on Tuesday afternoon, ending the wide receiver's stint with the team after only two games.

"With Diontae, unfortunately it didn't work out and we're on to the Chiefs," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters ahead of the team's AFC divisional-round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Johnson was reportedly upset in the locker room following the Texans' 32-12 wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 11, with running back Joe Mixon and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair trying to calm him.

In the wild-card game, Johnson had one reception for 12 yards. He only played 15 of the possible 70 offensive snaps for the Texans.

Johnson was claimed off waivers by Houston in late December after a short stint with the Baltimore Ravens, during which he refused to enter their game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 1.

He started the season with the Carolina Panthers and played seven games before he was traded to the Ravens in late October.

The Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander wrote Tuesday that Johnson didn't "have on-field chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud."

"Other players were also ahead of him on the depth chart. And Johnson needed to learn the playbook in a short time. But he seemed willing to make that happen, saying in his first media availability that he was a team player," Alexander wrote.

Johnson met with the media several weeks ago and said he was "about the team."

"I’m doing whatever the coaches ask me to do, special teams, punt return, if I play a couple plays here and there," he said. "Just contribute in some sort of way, that’s all I’m really worried about."
