Houston Texans rookie running back Dameon Pierce is already turning heads only five games into his NFL career.
With over half of his yards this season coming after contact, the 22-year-old has impressed with his hard-nosed running style.
After rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pierce described the techniques he uses to break tackles effectively, doing so with the casualness of a grizzled veteran.
"It's all about contact, like if you feel somebody -- you just spin out," Pierce said. "You got somebody on your leg, pull out. Somebody coming, dip your shoulder, double wrap the ball, just get YAC yards, man."
The 22-year-old makes playing in the NFL sound easy, and so far, it's looked that way for Pierce.
Through five games, Pierce not only leads all rookie running backs in yards (412) and touchdowns (3) but also sits among the league's overall leaders in rushing. Only Philadelphia Eagles Mile Sanders (414), Las Vegas Raiders Josh Jacobs (490), New York Giants Saquon Barkley (533), and Cleveland Browns Nick Chubb (593) have rushed for more yards than Pierce this season.
Pierce credited his Texans' teammates and the locker room culture in Houston for his early breakout as a rookie.
"It's really a village coming in, helping me as a rookie, especially a rookie, like you don't get that out of most locker rooms," Pierce said. "They kind of let the rookies fend for themselves, but I'm blessed and grateful to be in the locker room with such camaraderie and brotherhood that those guys lift me up in the moments and they push me along, help me develop."
