Texans Stock Watch:

Through seven games, edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. has recorded 7.5 sacks, the most in the NFL at the Week 7 mark. He has become the Houston Texans’ most reliable defensive playmaker, but his production has not been enough to cover for a secondary that has allowed too many explosive plays.

Anderson recorded 2.5 sacks against Indianapolis in Week 3 before adding half a sack against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. His best outing came against Tennessee in Week 5, when he registered three sacks in Houston’s 26-3 win. Conversely, the quieter games reveal Houston’s dependence on its star edge rusher. Anderson did not record a sack against Jacksonville in Week 6 or the Giants in Week 7. He also had just half a sack against Buffalo in the opener.

Danielle Hunter remains an important part of the pass rush. Hunter has added four sacks through seven games, giving Houston a proven threat opposite Anderson. The defensive line has produced 21 sacks, tied for the league lead at the Week 7 point. But the overall defense has not matched that strength, especially in coverage and tackling.

C.J. Stroud Is Keeping the Texans Competitive, but the Defense Keeps Letting Them Down

C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,867 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one interception through seven games. His production ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards, yet Houston is only 2-5. The problem is that the defense has repeatedly failed to make the stops needed to protect close games, including the overtime loss to the Giants.

Houston allowed 440 total yards to New York, including 188 rushing yards, and failed to force a turnover. Missed tackles and coverage breakdowns have undermined the pass rush’s work. Stroud also needs better protection from his offensive line. Houston’s line has struggled with penalties, run blocking and consistency in pass protection.

The Texans have allowed sacks and pressure at crucial moments, making it harder for Stroud to sustain drives. The bye week gives the coaching staff time to work on technique and communication. If the offense and defense both improve, Houston still has an opportunity to turn its season around.
