Texans want RB David Johnson to take pay cut?

The Texans acquired veteran running back David Johnson from the Arizona Cardinals last March via what will likely go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history. It now appears the 29-year-old will have to accept a reduction in salary to remain with Houston another season.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans want Johnson to take a pay cut for the 2021 campaign. According to Spotrac, Johnson is signed through next season to a deal that carries a salary-cap hit of $8.812 million. Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, $2.1 million of Johnson's $7.95 million base salary is guaranteed.

Johnson recorded 691 rushing yards with six touchdowns on the ground and 33 receptions for 314 yards and two scores in his first year with Houston.

Earlier Friday, the Texans parted ways with running back Duke Johnson and saved a little more than $5 million in the process. That could help allow Johnson to return as long as he's willing to play under Houston's desired price.
