Tez Johnson isn't playing like a rookie and he can help the Bucs win more games

Emeka Egbuka was one of the hottest topics of conversation throughout Week 6 and for good reason, but a different Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver stole the show for the pewter and red against the San Francisco 49ers.

Tez Johnson, whom the Bucs drafted with the 235th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back on Sunday. His 45-yard touchdown reception from Baker Mayfield gave the Bucs an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter and that basically iced the game, as the 9ers never recovered.

It wasn't just your standard touchdown catch, however. It's easily the Bucs' best play of the year and it might even just be the top highlight of the entire 2025 season, thus far.

But, it wasn't just the play itself that was impressive. How Johnson arrived there might be even more impressive when considering the context around it.

Johnson isn't playing like a rookie and his touchdown proves as much

The Bucs spoke highly of Johnson after he made a couple of big plays back in Week 5 and he backed them up in Week 6 by reading the 49ers defense like a book. His ability diagnose the scheme in front of him is what keyed the play and that's not easy for a rookie to do - no matter what round they're drafted in.

"Normally, Tez is supposed to go across the field, but he recognized a little bit of a hole and void in the coverage, so he took it," Baker Mayfield told reporters after the game. "And you can see him put his hand up on, probably on the replay, or whatever it is, and [it was] just a great adjustment by him. [I was] just trying to give him a chance. And he caught up to that ball and made a great catch."

Johnson's always had the ability, I mean, that's why he's an NFL draft pick. To see him putting things together this quickly, however, is awfully impressive and can help the Bucs navigate through the insane list of injuries at the wide receiver position.

"He's got speed and he can get down [the field]," Todd Bowles told reporters. "He can get past you if you don't know who he is and he's got great hands. He made a heck of a catch diving into the end zone."

If Johnson can keep this up, the Bucs' passing attack has a good shot to at least stay afloat at a serviceable level. At this point, that's a huge win for everyone involved.
