The Agony of Dolphins Monday Mornings
After the long-awaited first football game of the season, the Miami Dolphins came out and laid an egg against the Indianapolis Colts. For fans, the only thing that is worse than the blowout is having to endure a week of reliving it via social media and sports TV. Monday mornings are rough after a game like this one.
There are not many positives to take away from this game. Head Coach Mike McDaniel said he “did his best, but it wasn’t good enough.” His play-calling has come under much criticism. Although the play calling wasn’t particularly bad in this game, he still needs to give it up.
This was a pretty ugly game from the very beginning.
The Colts ran the ball down on the opening drive for a touchdown and weren’t particularly challenged by the Dolphins’ defense. Daniel Jones, in general, did not have too much pressure in the pocket. He became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to achieve at least 250 passing yards, a touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns in a season opener. The Colts scored on every offensive drive.
In their first possession, Tua threw an interception. The Dolphins quarterback, known for his accuracy, threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball. He has said he is going to watch a film on Tuesday, which is normally a day off for the team. It will be interesting to see if any other teammates join him. Tua only threw interceptions in three games in 2024. In each game, he threw multiple picks.
Hopefully, he is on track next week.
The pass-rushing efforts of Chubb, Robinson, and Phillips did not fare well, and Jones generally had plenty of time to throw against a weak Dolphins secondary. The scheme for this season was a strong front seven to compensate for the weak secondary.
The Colts are not considered to be a good team. However, they were playing that game in honor of their owner, Jim Irsay, who passed away in the off-season. It was clear that they were playing with intensity and physicality.
This is still not the time to panic. There are sixteen games left. The next game against the Patriots is essential. If Miami loses, they are 0-2 going into Buffalo to play the Bills. They could find themselves 0-3, and this team, with this roster, will find it a hard hole to climb out of.
