The Denver Broncos are back in the AFC Championship for the first time since 2016! The game was one for the ages as both sides gave it their all. The events that transpired after the game, however, have left both fanbases in pain.
The Buffalo Bills came into Mile High ready to play. It was clear that the Broncos had some early jitters. On the opening possession, Lil Jordan Humphrey dropped an easy touchdown pass in the redzone so Denver had to settle for a field goal.
In Buffalo’s first possession, they marched right down the field behind the legs of James Cook. Josh Allen capped off the drive with a pass to Mecole Hardman. The Broncos then went three and out, and all of a sudden, it looked scary.
The Bills were driving down with ease until Cook fumbled. The fumble shifted the momentum entirely in Denver’s favor. The home team finished the half on a 17-3 run and was aided by an awful Allen turnover.
The Broncos went into the half up 20-10. Buffalo began with the ball in the second half, and Nik Bonito ended the drive with a strip sack and set up his team in prime position to score. Denver, however, had to settle for a field goal to go up 23-10, and that oddly gave momentum back to the Bills.
Over the next couple of possessions, Bo Nix and the offense had stalled, and Buffalo began their second-half magic. They were the best second-half team by every metric, and it showed. Allen and company scored 17 straight points to make it 27-23 with just under five minutes to go.
This was where the Broncos had been all year long. Trailing in the fourth quarter with a chance to grab victory. Nix had a chance for his legendary moment.
The mile-high magic continued as Nix drove the team down to take the lead 30-27. The drive consisted of a couple of key connections to Cortland Sutton on third down, and capped it off with a beautiful 26-yard throw to Marvin Mims down the left sideline for the score.
Mims was the playmaker of the game with eight catches and 93 yards with a touchdown. With all that said, Allen and the Bills had 55 seconds and all three timeouts to tie this game. They had plenty of time.
In typical fashion, Allen led them down the field, setting up for Broncos kicker Matt Prater for a 50-yard field goal to tie the game, and he did it with ease. The game was now in overtime.
Denver began with the ball and could only muster one first down, so they had to punt to Buffalo. Allen and company converted two third downs to keep their drive alive. On their final play, he threw a deep pass to Brandin Cooks, which looked like a catch deep in the opponent territoy but then Ja’Quan McMillian took the ball away from him at the last moment.
It was a season-saving play that was a bit controversial. Gene Steratore, however, did say that it was the correct call and Denver had life again.
Nix and the offense drove down the field and sealed the game off with back-to-back pass interference calls to put them in chip-shot field goal range. Wil Lutz lined up the kick and drove it in to send the orange and blue to the AFC Championship.
The Broncos avenge their 31-7 defeat in Buffalo from a year ago in incredible fashion! The Bills had dominated many facets of the game, such as third down, rushing yards, and time of possession. When you turn the ball over five times, though, it’s hard to win in this league.
It’s incredibly poetic that the Broncos’ defense struggled to generate turnovers all year and then forced five in the biggest game of their season.
It was tough to see Allen fighting back tears during his press conference. He felt like he let the team down and pointed to his turnovers as the cause. Dion Dawkins, Allen’s teammate, was asked in the locker room about his thoughts on his quarterback’s comments.
Dawkins broke down in tears as he claimed that Allen didn’t let the team down at all. It was a tough watch, even as a Broncos fan, to see the post-game reaction from those two players. It feels like the franchise is cursed, and it’s a never-ending cycle. This was their best chance, and it still ended in heartbreak.
Denver, on the other side, quickly went from cheerful to somber after hearing some awful news. Sean Payton, in his post-game presser, stated that Nix broke his ankle on the play right before the pass to Mims in overtime that drew the penalty. The worst possible news to hear for a fanbase.
Nix had done so much for this team in these last two years. He has given this city, fanbase, and team hope. The Broncos were a mess for nearly a decade plus, and he gave the orange and blue stallion its identity back.
Broncos Country has Nix’s back, and we wish him a speedy recovery and an incredible comeback.
It is Jarrett Stidham time in Denver. He will be getting the nod to start in the Championship game. We are in unprecedented territory, but the city needs to believe.
It has been a fairy tale season. Can the Mile High Magic bring out a Nick Foles-like performance in Stiddy? We shall see how it plays out.
The New England Patriots and Houston Texans face off later today.
